How to fix Nova Launcher Gesture navigation issue in Google Pixel (and more)
Although full system gestures can be enabled within third party launchers like Nova Launcher Prime in most Android phones, it is still marred with issues such as-
Animations not working, Close All / Clear All button not showing up when accessing recent apps screen, Nova going back to pixel launcher and redrawing when swiping up. Users have also reported a delay in being able to tap on the homescreen app icons when returning from another app or from recent apps and so on. Another reported issue involves Nova launcher resetting to default launcher.
The problem with full system gestures and third party launchers are present in the latest Android 10 and 11 operating systems. The official response from Teslacoil Software, the developers of Nova Launcher Android personalization app, indicates that the issue is with the Google’s gesture system and not with Nova Launcher. It is also made clear that this issue may not be resolved for the foreseeable future and may even remain after a full and final version of Android 11 is released.
Though latest security patches have been released by Google, lots of issues still remain. However, there are certain steps you can try to work around this problem with Gesture navigation and Nova Launcher in Pixel 5 or other devices.
Solution for Nova going back to pixel launcher
Restart your device. Go to settings >> Apps >> Default apps >> Home App >> Select Nova Launcher
Another way to set Nova Launcher as your default home app, is during navigation if you are prompted to select a home app, select Nova Launcher and select “Always”.
Setting 3-button navigation in phone’s setting
This is not a solution but a work around. Essentially the issue is with Google’s gesture navigation, and if you prefer using Nova Launcher or other third party home apps without issue, you can enable 3-button navigation:
- Go to your device settings
- Go to System >> Gestures >> System navigation.
- You will see three options, select
Gesture navigation: No buttons.- 3-button navigation: Three buttons for Home, Back, and App Overview.
2-button navigation (Pixel 3a & earlier): Two buttons for Home and Back
Although you are reverting to an old school way of getting around your device, it will be hassle free and you will adjust to the change. We will keep an eye out for any updates regarding third party gesture control with Google’s navigation system.
