How to update Google Chrome and Android System WebView update on Play Store (Update forever pending issue)
If you cannot update the Google Chrome app and Android System Webview app on your Android phone, you are not all. Hundreds of users are having this same issue where they are able to update all other apps on Google Play Store except those two. When you manually try to update these apps by tapping the update button, it shows pending but does not update. At first I assumed this was a Google Chrome or Android System WebView specific update error on the play store. So I headed to the specific app settings to clear the cache or data for these two apps. Later, I found the issue was with the Google Play Store and Google Play Store Services. This error seems to be more common the Android devices running the latest OS i.e. Android 11 and above. Here are the steps to fix the Google Chrome and Android System WebView update issue on the Android play store:
Method 1: Uninstall and re-install Android System WebView
- For method 1, simply open Google Play Store >> search “Android System Webview”
- Tap “Uninstall”
- Once the app is uninstalled >> go back to Play Store and re-install
- Check if Android System WebView has updated to latest in Play Store
Method 2: Clearing Data for Google Play Services and Google Play Store
- Go to settings >> Apps & Notifications >> tap “see all … apps”
- Now you should see a list of all your apps. Also, make sure system apps are not hidden by tapping the three-dot icon on the top right and selecting “show system”.
- Scroll down the list of apps (or use the search by tapping the eye-glass icon on top)
- Select “Google Play Services”
- Tap “Force Stop”
- Select “Storage & Cache” >> Tap “Clear Storage”
- Again, go back to the list of apps (step 1- 3) and scroll down
- Select “Google Play Store”
- Tap “Force Stop”
- Select “Storage & Cache” >> Tap “Clear Storage”
The “clearing data “method seems to have worked for most people. Please note the way of getting into the app list shown above could be different for your device. The above steps will match the settings of Android devices like Google Pixel running stock Android. However, finding the same settings for a Samsung Galaxy, LG, One Plus, Huawei or Xiaomi devices should not be that difficult.
