How to fix- stuck on Obtaining IP Address trying to connect to Wi-Fi on Android devices
While most Android errors are Google Play Store Related, this post addresses”Obtaining IP address from …” network connection issue that prevents users from connecting to WiFi networks. Many Android devices are unable to connect to the internet because it gets stuck in obtaining IP address loop while trying to connect to home or office WiFi network. Similar issues is when you have put the right password but the WiFi network shows saved but is not connected.
Most users try resetting the router and disconnecting and reconnecting to WiFi but these fixes seldom work, and some even send their Android device for repair, which end up costing them money. Actually, you can easily fix the obtaining IP address Wi-Fi error yourself by following the steps below. Please note that this fix is intended for your home network and not for public access points where you have to access to the router configuration.
How to Fix Saved but not connected Wi-Fi on Android phone or tablet
- First enable Wi-Fi on your Android device
- Go to system Settings >> Network >> Tap on WiFi
- Now you will see various Wi-Fi networks
- If the password has already been saved for your WiFI SSID, click on the gear icon next to the WiFI name, and tap “Forget network”
- Now again tap on the WiFI network you wish to connect to
- Put your password but don’t select “connect” yet
- Select- “Show advanced options” or “Advanced option”. In some devices, you may have to enable this option
- Scroll down and change IP Settings (which is DHCP by default), to “Static”. Example below:
- Now you should see a bunch of advanced options.
- Simply assign a new IP address, network prefix length, DNS 1, and DNS 2. You can put the same values as shown in the fields. Or copy the settings below:
Once all the values have been set, select “connect”. Now the device should say “obtaining ip address” and then connect to the WiFi Network.
Please note this fix will only work on devices where the WiFI strength is normal or there is no issue with signal strength or detecting the Access Point. If your device is not detecting any WiFi network or a weak signal strength compared to other smartphones, this maybe hardware related and you will need to contact your service center.
